Step by step
Add your files
Drop files or a whole folder onto the uploader at rapidfile.cc, or tap to pick them on a phone.
Pick the options
Choose an expiry time, and optionally add a password, a download limit, a title or a message.
Share the link, code or QR
Send the link, read out the 6-digit code, or let the other person scan the QR code.
Recipient downloads
They open the link, or go to rapidfile.cc/receive and type the code. You can close your tab once the upload finishes.
Proton Drive is a cloud storage service from Proton, the company behind the encrypted email service. Its main promise is privacy: files are encrypted on your device, and Proton says shared links are end-to-end encrypted too. That is a strong position for people who want a drive they can trust with personal or client material. People look at Proton Drive for sharing, and then find that its sharing model is built around a drive, not a quick one-off send. This page explains the difference between the two, starting with the area where Proton Drive is clearly stronger.
The short version
| Proton Drive (free) | Rapidfile (free) | |
|---|---|---|
| Encryption | End-to-end encrypted; Proton says shared links are too | TLS in transit and encryption at rest; not end-to-end |
| Free allowance | Up to 5 GB of files for upload and sharing | 500 MB per transfer with no account; 2 GB with a free account |
| Link controls | Password and expiry date options described on Proton's help pages | Optional password, download limit, expiry of 1 hour, 1 day or 3 days (7 days with a free account) |
| How recipients get in | Check Proton's site for current sharing options | Link, 6-digit code or QR code; no account needed |
| Paid plans | Check Proton's plan page | Plus $3.99 a month; Pro $7.99 a month |
Proton Drive figures are from Proton's website as of October 2026. Plans and feature availability change, so check Proton's current plan comparison before you rely on any figure here.
Where Proton Drive is the stronger pick
Being honest about this saves you time:
- End-to-end encryption. This is the decisive difference. Proton says files are encrypted on your device and that only you and your chosen recipients can view them. Rapidfile uses TLS for the connection and encrypts files at rest, but it is not end-to-end encrypted, so the service can access the file contents. If the file is confidential enough that you would not want any provider to read it, Proton Drive is the right choice.
- A full drive, not just a transfer. Proton Drive keeps files in an account you can return to. If you want a private place to store and organize documents, and share them when needed, it is designed for that.
- Links that can be locked down. Proton's help pages describe password protection, expiry dates and the ability to revoke a shared link at any time. Those controls are useful for ongoing access to a file.
- Privacy-first brand. Proton's whole product line is built around encryption and privacy, so the default assumptions are closer to what a privacy-minded user expects.
If your files are sensitive and you want them kept private from the provider, start with Proton Drive.
Where Rapidfile fits better
- Codes and QR codes. Each transfer comes with a link, a 6-digit code and a QR code. Someone across the table types the code at rapidfile.cc/receive or scans the QR code with the Rapidfile app. Reading a short code is quicker than walking someone through a drive.
- No account for everyday files. Files up to 500 MB go out without signing in. A free Enzonic account raises the limit to 2 GB per transfer. See sending files without signing up.
- Expiry that suits one-off sends. Free links last 1 hour, 1 day or 3 days (7 days with a free account), and you can delete a transfer early. Plus allows up to 14 days and Pro up to 30 days.
- Folders without zipping first. Drag a folder into the uploader and it is zipped in your browser with its structure kept. See sending a folder online.
- Apps for desktop and Android. The Mac and Windows apps let you right-click a file and choose "Rapidfile: Get link". The Android app adds share-sheet support and QR scanning.
- Command line. The CLI runs on Node 18 or newer with no extra dependencies, and
rapidfile send <path>sends a file from a terminal. A plaincurlupload also works.
Encryption: what each one protects
End-to-end encryption and transport encryption are different things, and the difference decides this choice.
With Rapidfile, the connection is encrypted with TLS, and stored files are encrypted at rest on Cloudflare's network. Every upload is scanned with ClamAV, an open-source virus scanner, and flagged files show a warning with a "Download anyway" option. These protections guard the connection and stored data. They do not hide the file contents from Rapidfile.
With Proton Drive, Proton describes encryption on your device, before the file leaves it. The key point is that only the people with the right keys or link can read the file, and Proton says that includes shared links. That is the stronger model for confidential material.
A password on a Rapidfile transfer adds a barrier for the recipient, but it is access control, not end-to-end encryption. Do not treat it as a substitute for end-to-end encryption on sensitive material.
Free limits in practice
Proton Drive's free plan allows up to 5 GB of files for upload and sharing, according to Proton's page. Rapidfile's free plan allows 500 MB with no account and 2 GB with a free account. If your file is between 2 GB and 5 GB, Proton Drive may be the simpler route, but you should confirm the current free limits on Proton's site before you start.
Rapidfile's free plan is ad-supported. Plus and Pro remove ads on all Rapidfile products and apps. Proton's paid plans are a separate decision, and you should compare current prices on Proton's site.
Two practical points matter for either tool. The size of the file decides which free plan can carry it, and the recipient's timing decides which link settings you should use. If the recipient needs the file for a day, set a one-day expiry on Rapidfile. If they need it for several weeks, check the expiry options on Proton's site before you choose.
What Rapidfile does not do
Rapidfile is a good tool for one-off transfers, but it is not a drive. There is no desktop sync client, no iOS app (iPhone users use the website), no real-time collaboration, and no email delivery of links. You share the link or code yourself. Transfers are temporary and are deleted automatically at expiry. Rapidfile's Media and Upload API products store files for longer, but they are separate products with their own pages.
Moving a non-sensitive file to Rapidfile
For a file that does not need end-to-end encryption, the process is short:
- Open rapidfile.cc. Files up to 500 MB need no account, and up to 2 GB needs a free account.
- Choose an expiry time, and add a password or download limit if you want one.
- Copy the link or the 6-digit code into your message, or show the QR code.
- The recipient opens the link or types the code at rapidfile.cc/receive. They do not need a Rapidfile or Proton account.
Keep sensitive files in Proton Drive, and use Rapidfile for the ordinary ones.
Which one should you use?
Use Proton Drive when the file is confidential and you want end-to-end encryption, or when you want a private drive you can return to. Use Rapidfile when the file is ordinary, you want to send it quickly to someone on any device, and expiring links with codes and QR codes suit the job. If the file would be uncomfortable to see on any provider's server, choose the end-to-end encrypted option.
FAQ
Is Proton Drive sharing end-to-end encrypted?
Yes. Proton says it protects shared links with end-to-end encryption, so the link is needed to access the file. Rapidfile is not end-to-end encrypted.
Can Proton Drive links have a password and an expiry date?
Proton's help pages describe both options for shared links. Check Proton's plan page for which link options apply to the free plan.
What is the free upload limit on Proton Drive?
Proton's page describes up to 5 GB of files for upload and sharing on the free plan. Check Proton's site for the current figure.
What is the largest free transfer on Rapidfile?
Without an account, 500 MB per transfer. With a free account, 2 GB. Plus allows 10 GB and Pro allows 50 GB per transfer.
Do recipients need an account to download from Rapidfile?
No. They open the link in a browser or type the 6-digit code at rapidfile.cc/receive. The Android app can also scan the QR code.
Which should I use for sensitive files?
For material you need to keep unreadable to the service, choose an end-to-end encrypted option such as Proton Drive. Rapidfile encrypts files in transit and at rest, but it is not end-to-end encrypted.
