A Bitwarden Send Alternative for Large Files

Bitwarden Send lets you share text and files with end-to-end encryption from inside a password manager. Here is how it compares with Rapidfile, where each one fits better, and when a plain transfer service is the easier choice.

Up to 500 MB · Sign in for 2 GB

Step by step

  1. Add your files

Drop files or a whole folder onto the uploader at rapidfile.cc, or tap to pick them on a phone.

  2. Pick the options

Choose an expiry time, and optionally add a password, a download limit, a title or a message.

  3. Share the link, code or QR

Send the link, read out the 6-digit code, or let the other person scan the QR code.

  4. Recipient downloads

They open the link, or go to rapidfile.cc/receive and type the code. You can close your tab once the upload finishes.

Bitwarden Send is a feature of Bitwarden, the password manager. It lets you share a piece of text or a file through a temporary link, and Bitwarden describes its Sends as end-to-end encrypted. It is a good tool if you already keep your passwords in Bitwarden and want to pass a secret or a short file to someone without sending it through email. People look for a Bitwarden Send alternative for a different reason: the file limits, the Premium requirement for file Sends, or a need to send something large to someone who is not part of their password manager workflow. Rapidfile is one option. This page sets out what Bitwarden's help pages say, what Rapidfile does, and where each one is the better fit.

Where Bitwarden Send is the stronger pick

Bitwarden Send is the better choice in several situations, and this page should not pretend otherwise.

  • End-to-end encryption. Bitwarden says all Send content is end-to-end encrypted. Rapidfile is not, so if the file must stay unreadable to the service that hosts it, Bitwarden Send is the right tool.
  • Sharing secrets from a password manager. If you already keep credentials in Bitwarden, sharing a text Send from the same app keeps your workflow in one place.
  • Mobile apps tied to your vault. Bitwarden has mobile apps, and file Sends from mobile are limited to 100 MB, so use it for smaller items on the go.

If you need end-to-end encryption, or you already manage credentials in Bitwarden and send only small items, Bitwarden Send is a sensible fit. Check its help pages for the current text limits, because the figures for text Sends differ between its own articles.

Where Rapidfile fits better

  • Files without a paid plan. Bitwarden's help article says file Sends require Premium. Rapidfile sends files up to 500 MB with no account, and up to 2 GB with a free account. For large one-off files, you do not need to pay first.
  • A code and a QR code. Every Rapidfile transfer gets a 6-digit code. Someone can type the code at rapidfile.cc/receive, or scan the QR code with the Android app, so the recipient does not need a link pasted into a chat.
  • Apps for desktop and Android. Right-click any file in Finder or File Explorer and choose "Rapidfile: Get link" or "Send to my devices". The Android app adds share-sheet support and QR scanning. See the apps page.
  • Command line and curl. The Rapidfile CLI runs on Node 18 or newer with no extra dependencies, and rapidfile send <path> sends a file from a terminal. A plain curl upload also works.
  • Folders without zipping first. Drag a folder in and it is zipped in your browser with its structure kept. Details are in sending a folder online.
  • Longer links on paid plans. Rapidfile's Plus plan allows links up to 14 days and Pro up to 30 days. Bitwarden's maximum Send lifetime is 30 days, so Pro matches it.

How Bitwarden's limits compare in practice

The file limit is the first thing to check. Bitwarden's help article gives 500 MB for file Sends on desktop and web, and 100 MB on mobile. The Premium requirement is the second. Bitwarden's help article says only Premium users and members of paid organizations can make a file Send, and the account email must be verified. For a single send from a phone, the 100 MB mobile limit can get in the way quickly with a video or a set of raw photos.

Rapidfile's limits work differently. Without an account, you can send up to 500 MB. With a free account, up to 2 GB. Plus and Pro raise the size per transfer to 10 GB and 50 GB. Links last 1 hour, 1 day, 3 days or 7 days on the free plan. Expired transfers are deleted automatically, and you can delete one early if you no longer need it.

The two products also differ in who they are built for. Bitwarden Send sits inside a password manager, so its natural user already has a vault, a plan and a routine. Rapidfile is a standalone transfer service, so it suits someone who has never signed up for anything and just needs a file to reach a person. Neither approach is better in general. They solve slightly different problems, and the one that matches your situation is the right one.

Encryption and privacy, compared fairly

Bitwarden states that Sends are end-to-end encrypted, which means the content is encrypted before it leaves your device. Rapidfile encrypts files in transit with TLS and at rest on Cloudflare's network, scans every upload with ClamAV, and deletes files at expiry. It is not end-to-end encrypted, so Rapidfile can access files it stores. If that difference matters for your files, choose Bitwarden Send or another end-to-end encrypted tool. If you are sending a large file that is not highly sensitive, Rapidfile's transport and storage protections may be enough for your purpose.

Read both services' privacy pages before you send anything confidential. The right choice depends on what you are sending and who needs to read it.

Moving a file from Bitwarden Send to Rapidfile

If you decide to use Rapidfile for a particular file, the steps are short:

  1. Open rapidfile.cc on the device you are using. Files up to 500 MB need no account.
  2. Set the expiry time and, if you need it, a password before you upload.
  3. Copy the link or the 6-digit code into your message. Rapidfile does not send an email for you.
  4. For files between 500 MB and 2 GB, sign in with a free account. Larger files need Plus or Pro.

Your recipient does not need a Bitwarden or Rapidfile account. They open the link, or type the code at rapidfile.cc/receive.

Which one should you use?

Use Bitwarden Send when end-to-end encryption is the deciding factor, or when you already keep your credentials in Bitwarden and the item is small. Use Rapidfile when you need to send a file up to 500 MB without an account or a Premium plan, want to share with a code or QR code, or need apps for Mac, Windows and Android. For a secret that must stay private, pick the end-to-end encrypted option. For a large file that just needs to reach someone, Rapidfile is usually the quicker route.
