Box is a cloud content platform used by businesses to store, organize, manage and share files. Teams keep shared folders there, collaborate on documents and control who can see what. Many people also use it for simple sharing, which is where the free plan's limits matter. The free personal plan caps each upload at 250 MB, so a short video, a set of high-resolution images or a large export can stop you before the file is shared. People look for an alternative when they need to send one bigger file to a client, or when they want a quick link without setting up a shared folder. Rapidfile is built for that job. This guide compares the two honestly, so you can choose the right tool for each task.

Where Box is the stronger pick
Being honest about this saves you time:
- Team collaboration. Box is designed for shared folders that a group works in over months or years. If you need a single place where colleagues add, update and find files, Box is the right kind of tool. Rapidfile is not a team workspace.
- Larger uploads on paid plans. Box's support article lists higher per-file caps on paid tiers, including 5 GB for Personal Pro and up to 500 GB on its largest Enterprise Advanced plan. If you need a single file above 50 GB, Box's business tiers are the right place to look. Rapidfile's largest transfer is 50 GB on Pro.
- Administration and control. Businesses that need account administration, policy settings and organization-wide access usually choose a managed platform like Box over a sending tool.
- Ongoing storage. If the files need to stay in one place and be found later, a storage platform is the better fit. Rapidfile transfers are temporary. Files are deleted automatically at expiry.
If the work is a team's shared content, Box is the stronger choice.
Where Rapidfile fits better
- A link that does one job. Send a file, set an expiry, and the link stops working when it expires. There is no folder to manage afterwards.
- No account for the recipient. They open the link in a browser or type the 6-digit code at rapidfile.cc/receive. Nothing to install and no login.
- Codes and QR codes. Every transfer comes with a code and a QR code. This is handy in a meeting or at a counter, where reading out a short code is faster than sharing a long link. The Rapidfile app can scan the QR code on Android.
- Bigger files without an account. Files up to 500 MB need no sign-in, and a free account lifts the limit to 2 GB per transfer.
- Folders without zipping first. Drag a folder into the uploader and it is zipped in your browser with its structure kept. See sending a folder online.
- Password and download limits. Add a password or a download limit to a single transfer, as described on the password-protected file sharing page.
Free upload limits and what they mean in practice
The 250 MB cap on Box's free personal plan is per file. Box's support article also says the limit follows the folder owner's plan, so a shared folder owned by a free account keeps the 250 MB cap even if a collaborator has a higher plan. If you have hit that limit, the usual choices are to upgrade, to split the file, or to send it through a tool built for transfers.
A quick check before you upload is to look at the file size in Finder or File Explorer. A file under 250 MB will fit Box's free personal cap, subject to the account rules on Box's site. A file between 250 MB and 500 MB goes through Rapidfile with no account. Between 500 MB and 2 GB, you need a free Enzonic account on Rapidfile. Above 2 GB, Rapidfile's Plus or Pro plans raise the limit.
Rapidfile's free limits are different in shape. Up to 500 MB works without an account. A free account raises that to 2 GB per transfer. The free daily quota is 200 transfers or 50 GB, and there is no monthly transfer counter. Remember that the free plan is supported by ads. Plus and Pro remove ads on all Rapidfile products and apps.
No desktop sync
Box has desktop tools that keep folders in step with the cloud. Rapidfile does not. It has no desktop sync client and no iOS app, so iPhone users use the website. The Mac and Windows apps let you right-click any file and choose "Rapidfile: Get link" or "Send to my devices", which is a different job. If you need a folder that always matches a copy on several computers, use a sync service instead.
If your organization already runs Box for team folders, keep that setup as it is. Use Rapidfile for the moment you need to send a single file to someone who is not part of that system.
Moving a one-off send from Box to Rapidfile
For a single file that is too big for Box's free plan, the switch is simple:
- Open rapidfile.cc on the computer you are using. Up to 500 MB needs no account. For 2 GB, sign in with a free Enzonic account.
- Choose an expiry time that matches how long the recipient needs the file. Add a password if the file is sensitive.
- Copy the link or the 6-digit code into your message. Rapidfile does not send an email to your recipient for you, so you share the link yourself.
- Your recipient downloads from the browser, with no sign-up.
Keep the original in Box if you want to store it, and use Rapidfile only for the delivery.
Which one should you use?
Use Box when a team needs shared folders, administration and files that stay in place for a long time. Use Rapidfile when you need to send a file to someone outside your team, the file is large for Box's free plan, and you want a link that expires on its own. For most one-off sends up to 2 GB, Rapidfile's free plan is the simpler route. Check Box's pricing page and Rapidfile's pricing page before you choose a paid plan for either.
FAQ
What is the upload limit on Box's free plan?
Box's support article lists 250 MB per file for free personal accounts. Uploads to a shared folder are capped by the folder owner's plan. Check Box's site for the current figure.
Can I send a file bigger than 250 MB without paying for Box?
On Rapidfile you can send up to 500 MB without an account, and up to 2 GB with a free account. Recipients never need an account.
Is Rapidfile a replacement for Box?
Not for team storage. Box manages files for an organization over time. Rapidfile is for a one-off or occasional send, with a link that expires and a code the recipient types in.
Do recipients need a Box or Rapidfile account to download?
On Rapidfile, no. They open the link in any browser or type the 6-digit code at rapidfile.cc/receive. Check Box's site for how its share links work for recipients.
How long does a Rapidfile link last?
On the free plan, 1 hour, 1 day, 3 days or 7 days. Plus allows up to 14 days and Pro allows up to 30 days.
Does Rapidfile sync files to my computer like Box Drive?
No. Rapidfile has no desktop sync client. It has apps for sending and getting links from Finder and File Explorer.
