A Free Dropbox Transfer Alternative

Dropbox Transfer lets Dropbox users send large files by link, and the people receiving them do not need an account. Here is how it compares with Rapidfile, where each one fits better, and how to send a file in under a minute.

Send Receive

Drop files or a folder

Files Folder

Up to 500 MB · Sign in for 2 GB

Step by step

  1. Add your files

Drop files or a whole folder onto the uploader at rapidfile.cc, or tap to pick them on a phone.

  2. Pick the options

Choose an expiry time, and optionally add a password, a download limit, a title or a message.

  3. Share the link, code or QR

Send the link, read out the 6-digit code, or let the other person scan the QR code.

  4. Recipient downloads

They open the link, or go to rapidfile.cc/receive and type the code. You can close your tab once the upload finishes.

Dropbox Transfer is a feature of the Dropbox service for sending large files by link. Anyone with a Dropbox account can use it, and the people who receive the files do not need one. It is a sensible choice if you already keep your work in Dropbox. People look for an alternative for different reasons: the sender must have an account, free links expire after 7 days, or they only need to send a file once and do not want a storage subscription. Rapidfile is one option, so this page explains where each one fits.

Where Dropbox Transfer is the stronger pick

Being honest about this saves you time:

  • It lives in your Dropbox. If your files already sit in Dropbox, sending a transfer takes no extra step, and the transfer sits alongside the rest of your work.
  • Higher paid limits on the top plans. Dropbox lists 250 GB per transfer on its Business Plus and Enterprise plans. Rapidfile's largest transfer is 50 GB on Pro.
  • A familiar sharing flow for Dropbox users. If the people you work with already expect Dropbox links, they will know what to do.

If your team already pays for Dropbox and you send files all day, staying inside Dropbox is the simpler choice. For a wider comparison of free options, see our free file transfer services compared.

Where Rapidfile fits better

  • No account to send small files. Anything up to 500 MB goes through without signing in. See sending files without signing up.
  • Recipients who are not online with you. Files are stored on Cloudflare's network, so the person receiving does not need to be online when you upload. You can close the tab once the upload finishes.
  • Codes and QR codes. Each transfer gets a 6-digit code and a QR code. Recipients type the code at rapidfile.cc/receive or scan the QR code in the Rapidfile app. That is quicker than sharing a folder link in a meeting.
  • Apps for desktop and phone. In Finder or File Explorer, right-click a file and choose "Rapidfile: Get link" or "Send to my devices". The Android app adds share-sheet support and QR scanning.
  • Ad-free paid plans. The free plan is ad-supported. Plus and Pro remove ads on all Rapidfile products and apps.
  • A command line for scripts. The CLI runs on Node 18 or newer with no extra dependencies, and rapidfile send <path> sends a file from a terminal.

What happens to the file after it expires

Dropbox says that a Transfer expires after its set time and that the files are deleted from its servers 30 days after expiry. Rapidfile deletes transfers automatically at expiry, and you can delete one early if you no longer need it. Read both services' current terms before you send anything sensitive, since neither one is end-to-end encrypted.

If you want files to stay available until you remove them, that is a different job. Rapidfile Media hosts images and video with direct CDN links, and the Upload API stores files for developers' apps. Both keep files until you delete them, which suits ongoing hosting more than one-off sending.

Sending without a Dropbox account

The main practical difference is who needs an account. Dropbox Transfer asks the sender to be a Dropbox user. Rapidfile asks nothing of the sender for files up to 500 MB, and asks for a free Enzonic account only for files up to 2 GB. Recipients never need an account on either service.

So if you are sending a one-off file to a client who does not use Dropbox, and the file is under 500 MB, Rapidfile lets you skip creating an account. If the file is between 500 MB and 2 GB, you need a free account on Rapidfile, but you still avoid Dropbox.

Which one should you use?

Use Dropbox Transfer if your files already live in Dropbox, you want paid limits up to 250 GB on a business plan, or your team works inside Dropbox every day. Use Rapidfile if you want to send without any account, you want codes and QR codes, or you need ad-free paid plans and apps for Mac, Windows and Android. Both services give a free transfer of up to 2 GB for a signed-in sender, so the account rules and the sharing method are usually what decide it.

FAQ

Do I need a Dropbox account to send with Dropbox Transfer?

Yes. Dropbox says Transfer is available to Dropbox users, so the sender needs an account. A free Dropbox account works. The recipient does not need one.

How big can a free Dropbox Transfer be?

On the Dropbox Basic plan, a transfer can be up to 2 GB, and its link expires after 7 days.

Can I send a file with Rapidfile without an account?

Yes, for files up to 500 MB. For up to 2 GB, you sign in with a free Enzonic account. Recipients never need an account.

How long do Rapidfile links last?

On the free plan you can choose 1 hour, 1 day, 3 days or 7 days. Plus allows links up to 14 days, and Pro allows up to 30 days.

Does Rapidfile store files long term like Dropbox?

Transfers are temporary and are deleted at expiry. Files in Rapidfile Media and the Upload API stay until you delete them, so those products suit ongoing hosting.

Is Rapidfile end-to-end encrypted?

No. Files are encrypted in transit with TLS and at rest, but Rapidfile is not end-to-end encrypted, so do not rely on it for the most sensitive material.
