A Free Xender Alternative for Phones and Computers

Xender moves files between phones and computers without needing the internet. Rapidfile covers the cases where the other person is on a different network and the file has to wait for them.

Up to 500 MB · Sign in for 2 GB

Step by step

  1. Open Rapidfile on the sending device

Go to rapidfile.cc in any browser, or open the Rapidfile app on Android. No account is needed for files up to 500 MB.

  2. Add your files

Drop files or a folder onto the uploader on a computer, or tap to pick photos and files on a phone.

  3. Set the options

Choose an expiry time, and optionally add a password, a download limit, a title or a message.

  4. Share the link, code or QR code

The receiver opens the link, types the 6-digit code at rapidfile.cc/receive, or scans the QR code, from any network.

Xender is a long-running app for sharing files between phones, tablets and computers. Its website lists apps for Windows, Mac, Android and iPhone, and an APK download for Android. It describes transfers as wireless and free of cables, and says they work without an internet connection. People look for an alternative for several reasons. Some want a browser-based option that needs no app on the receiving side. Others need a link to send to someone far away, or want a clearer picture of how their files are handled.

Where Xender is the stronger pick

  • No internet needed. If you are on a train, in a field or on a network with no outside access, a direct transfer works where Rapidfile cannot, because Rapidfile needs an internet connection on both ends.
  • Direct transfers. Xender says files are not stored in the cloud. A direct transfer leaves no copy on a server to expire, which some people prefer for personal files.
  • Apps on every major platform. Xender has apps for iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac, which makes it a single family of tools for mixed households.
  • Speed in the same room. Between two phones next to each other, a direct transfer skips the upload and download steps entirely.
  • Extra features. Xender's site also advertises social media video downloads and a YouTube to MP3 converter. Those are outside what Rapidfile does. Check the terms that apply to them, and make sure you have the rights to any content you download or convert.

Where Rapidfile fits better

  • Different networks. A direct transfer needs the devices to reach each other. A Rapidfile link works from anywhere, so the person across town can download it without a shared network. The receiver can type the code at rapidfile.cc/receive.
  • Receivers who will not install an app. The receiver only needs a browser. That matters for a client, a relative or a colleague who will not install anything for one file.
  • Downloads later. You can upload now and let the other person download tomorrow. The upload stays available until the link expires.
  • Sharing one file with several people. One link or code works for everyone who has it, and a download limit can cap how many times it is used.
  • Clear controls. Set a password, choose an expiry from 1 hour to 7 days on the free plan, or delete a transfer early. The code sharing guide explains how to hand over a 6-digit code.
  • Virus scanning. Every upload is scanned with ClamAV, an open-source scanner. Flagged files show a warning and a "Download anyway" option, so you can decide.
  • Folders. Folders are zipped in the browser with their structure kept, so you do not need to compress them first. See sending a folder online.

Reading the privacy claims

Xender's website makes several statements about privacy: that it has no access to user data, does not store personal data in the cloud, does not compress files during transfer, and does not intrude on personal privacy. These are the company's own claims, so read the privacy policy on the Xender site before relying on them.

Rapidfile's own position is set out plainly. Files are encrypted in transit with TLS and at rest on Cloudflare's network. They are deleted at expiry, or earlier if you delete them. Rapidfile is not end-to-end encrypted, so it should not be used as the only protection for highly sensitive material.

Setup on each device

With Xender, the usual route is to install the app on each device from its store or from the APK on Xender's site, then open it on both ends and connect them. Because the transfer is direct, both devices need the app and need to be near each other. That is quick once it is set up, but it means every person who might receive a file needs the app first.

With Rapidfile, the sender opens rapidfile.cc or the Android app, and the receiver needs nothing beyond a browser. A file can go to someone on a different continent, a relative who only uses a tablet, or a colleague on a work laptop that does not allow new apps. The sender sees progress during the upload, and then the link, code and QR code appear for sharing.

Large files and slow connections

Xender's website says there is no limit on file size, which is an attractive claim for a large video or a folder of raw photos. A direct transfer between two phones on a good Wi-Fi network can move a lot of data without involving a server at all.

Rapidfile does have limits: 500 MB per transfer without an account, 2 GB with a free account, 10 GB on Plus and 50 GB on Pro. A 15 GB video needs the Pro plan, since Plus allows 10 GB per transfer, and a fast upload helps on both ends, because the file has to reach Cloudflare's network before the receiver can download it. Single files are sent byte for byte, so the upload is the file you started with, not a compressed copy.

Choosing by situation

If both phones are on the same Wi-Fi, in the same room, and you want no upload at all, a direct app is the simplest choice, and Xender is a reasonable option to test. If the other person is on a different network, is not in the room, or uses an iPhone or a computer where you do not want to install anything, a Rapidfile link or code is easier to hand over. For a very large file on a slow connection, both approaches can struggle, so compare speed on your own network before you commit.

Which one should you use?

Use Xender when you need offline, direct transfers between devices in the same place and you are comfortable with the app on both ends. Use Rapidfile when the receiver is elsewhere, when they only have a browser, or when you want an expiry, a password and a clear record of the link. Many people keep both, using whichever suits the file and the person they are sending it to.

FAQ

Is Xender free?

Xender's website describes the app as free, with no subscription fees. It did not state whether ads or in-app purchases apply, so check the App Store or Google Play listing before you install.

Does Xender need the internet?

Xender's website says transfers work without an internet connection. Rapidfile is a web service, so both devices need internet access to upload and download.

Is there a file size limit in Xender?

Xender's website says there is no limit on file size. Check its site for any updates, and compare that with Rapidfile's limits of 500 MB without an account, 2 GB free, 10 GB on Plus and 50 GB on Pro.

How long does a Rapidfile transfer last?

On the free plan, a link lasts 1 hour, 1 day, 3 days or 7 days. Files are deleted automatically when the link expires, and you can delete a transfer earlier.

Can I use Rapidfile on an iPhone?

Yes, in Safari at rapidfile.cc. Rapidfile does not have an iPhone app, so iPhone users use the website.
