Telegram is a messaging app, and it is also a quick way to pass a file to a friend, a colleague or a group. You can attach a document in a chat, and the file arrives in seconds on any device where the chat is open. The limits are the part that catches people out. Telegram's FAQ lists files up to 2 GB each for most chats, with 4 GB per file for Premium users in group chats. Telegram also needs the other person to have an account. People look for an alternative when the file is bigger than that limit, when the recipient does not use Telegram, or when they want to share a file without putting it in a chat history. Rapidfile is one option for those cases.

Where Telegram is the stronger pick
Telegram does several things well for everyday sharing:
- A conversation already exists. If you are already talking to someone on Telegram, sending a file in that chat takes one tap. Nothing has to be set up.
- Groups. Telegram groups let a team or a family share files with many people at once, and the chat keeps them in one place.
- Speed for small files. A document or a photo sent in a chat usually arrives quickly, and the recipient sees it where they already read messages.
- Files that belong in the chat. When the file is part of an ongoing conversation, keeping it there means nobody has to hunt for a link.
If your recipient already uses Telegram and the file is under the limit for that chat, staying in Telegram is the simpler choice. Our guide to sending a 2 GB file covers the case where a file is close to that limit.
Where Rapidfile fits better
- No account for the person receiving. They open the link in any browser, or type the 6-digit code at rapidfile.cc/receive. A recipient who has never used Telegram can still get the file.
- A link, a code or a QR code. Every transfer comes with all three. A code is useful when you are in the same room and the other person is reading from a phone. The Rapidfile app on Android can scan the QR code.
- Expiry you choose. A chat keeps a file for as long as the chat exists. A Rapidfile transfer lasts 1 hour, 1 day, 3 days or 7 days on the free plan, and it is deleted when it expires. You can also delete it early, which suits sensitive material. More on this in our guide to expiring file links.
- Password and download limit. You can protect a transfer with a password, or cap how many times it can be downloaded. Telegram does not offer these options for a file sent in a chat.
- Sending folders. Drop a folder onto the uploader and it is zipped in your browser with its structure kept. You can read more in our guide to sending a folder online.
- Ad-free paid plans. The free plan is ad-supported. Plus and Pro remove ads on all Rapidfile products and apps.
Reading the size limits
Telegram's limits are per file, so a chat can carry many files. What matters is the size of the largest one. For most people, 2 GB covers documents, most videos and archives. A raw video from a modern camera or a large project folder can go past it.
Rapidfile's free limits work differently. Without an account a single transfer is capped at 500 MB, and with a free account it is capped at 2 GB. A file bigger than 2 GB needs the Plus plan, which allows 10 GB per transfer, or Pro, which allows 50 GB. Check both sites before you choose a plan, because prices and limits change.
Rapidfile does not compress single files. A file is sent byte for byte, so a video stays the same size on arrival. Folders are zipped with their structure intact.
Privacy and encryption
Telegram's default chats are not end-to-end encrypted. Its Secret Chats option is, but it works only one-to-one and is tied to one device. Group chats are not end-to-end encrypted. If you need protection in transit and on the server, Telegram's default setup is one option. It is not the same as end-to-end encryption.
Rapidfile uses TLS for transfers and encrypts files at rest on Cloudflare's network. It also scans every upload with ClamAV, an open-source virus scanner. Rapidfile is not end-to-end encrypted, so for the most sensitive files, use a tool that is. A password on a transfer controls who can open it, which is useful but is a different thing from end-to-end encryption.
Telegram also deletes an account after a period of inactivity, which is 18 months by default according to its FAQ, and that removes the media stored in the cloud. This is a rule for accounts rather than files, and it is worth knowing if you rely on old chats as an archive.
Moving a file from Telegram to Rapidfile
If the file is already in Telegram and you want to pass it on with a link:
- Save the file from the chat to your device.
- Open rapidfile.cc, or use the Rapidfile app, and add the file.
- Choose an expiry time, and optionally add a password or a download limit.
- Send the link or the 6-digit code. Rapidfile does not email the recipient, so you share it yourself.
Files up to 500 MB need no account. For larger files, sign in with a free Enzonic account. Your recipient does not need to change anything.
Which one should you use?
Use Telegram when the person already uses it, the file is under the chat limit, and you want the file to sit in the conversation. Use Rapidfile when the recipient has no Telegram account, when the file is bigger than the chat limit, or when you want a link, a code or a QR code that expires on a schedule. If you need end-to-end encryption, neither service on its default setting is the right fit, so choose a tool built for that.
FAQ
What is the file size limit on Telegram?
Telegram's FAQ lists up to 2 GB per file for most chats, and 4 GB per file with Premium in group chats. Check Telegram's site for the current limits in each type of chat.
Does the person receiving my file need Telegram?
For a Telegram chat, yes. Telegram's messaging works with contacts who have Telegram, or with people you reach by username. Rapidfile needs no account on the receiving side.
How large a file can I send with Rapidfile?
Up to 500 MB per transfer without an account, and up to 2 GB per transfer with a free account. Plus raises the limit to 10 GB and Pro to 50 GB per transfer.
Does Rapidfile keep files as long as Telegram does?
No. Rapidfile transfers expire. On the free plan you can choose 1 hour, 1 day, 3 days or 7 days, and the file is deleted at that point. Telegram's cloud files depend on your account staying active.
Is Telegram end-to-end encrypted?
Default Telegram chats are not end-to-end encrypted. Its Secret Chats mode is, but it is one-to-one and tied to a single device. Rapidfile is not end-to-end encrypted in any mode.
Can I send a file through Rapidfile from my phone?
Yes. The Android app lets you use the share sheet to get a link or send to your own devices. iPhone users use the website at rapidfile.cc, which works in any modern browser.
