SwissTransfer is a free file transfer service that accepts files up to 50 GB per transfer. It is run by Infomaniak, a Swiss hosting company, and many people use it for one-off sends that are too large for email. People look for an alternative for a few reasons: the retention and download rules on the free plan, the way links expire, or a preference for a different provider. Rapidfile is one option. It has a much smaller per-transfer limit on the free plan, so this page explains where each one is the better choice.

Where SwissTransfer is the stronger pick

Being honest about this saves you time:

  • Much bigger transfers. SwissTransfer accepts files up to 50 GB. Rapidfile's free plan stops at 2 GB per transfer, and even its Pro plan stops at 50 GB. If you regularly send video projects, large archives or full-resolution photo libraries, SwissTransfer covers far more of them.
  • Longer free retention. Free senders can keep a transfer for up to 30 days. Rapidfile's free links last up to 7 days with a free account.
  • A Swiss provider. SwissTransfer is run by Infomaniak, a Swiss hosting company. If you want a provider based in Switzerland, that is a clear reason to choose it.

If you need to send one large file this week and you are happy with a Swiss service, SwissTransfer is the better match. For a wider comparison, see our free file transfer services compared.

Where Rapidfile fits better

  • Quick sends with no sign-in. Anything up to 500 MB goes through without an account. See sending files without signing up.
  • Codes and QR codes. Every transfer gets a 6-digit code and a QR code. Recipients type the code at rapidfile.cc/receive or scan the QR code in the Rapidfile app.
  • Apps for desktop and phone. In Finder or File Explorer, right-click a file and choose "Rapidfile: Get link" or "Send to my devices". The Android app adds share-sheet support and QR scanning.
  • Ad-free paid plans. The free plan is ad-supported. Plus and Pro remove ads on all Rapidfile products and apps.
  • Folders without zipping first. Drop a folder onto the uploader and it is zipped in your browser with its structure kept. Details are in sending a folder online.
  • Password and expiry controls. You can add a password, set a short expiring link, or delete a transfer early.

Retention and downloads on the free plan

SwissTransfer's FAQ describes a few rules that are worth reading before you rely on a long link. Free senders choose a retention period of 1, 3, 7, 15 or 30 days. For some retention settings, the sender gets an email offer to extend the link, and the extension is available for a limited time. Once a link has expired, it cannot be revived, so if a recipient is late, you will need to send a new transfer.

On the download side, the free plan offers download limits of 1, 20, 100 or 250. Unlimited downloads are a paid feature. SwissTransfer also notes that its "Download All" zip option is unavailable when the archive is larger than 10 GB, so a recipient has to download the files one at a time. The FAQ suggests grouping the files into one archive beforehand if that suits your recipient.

Rapidfile takes a different approach. Folders are zipped in the browser before upload, and you pick a download limit and an expiry that suit the file. Files are deleted automatically at expiry.

Moving from SwissTransfer to Rapidfile

If your files are 2 GB or under, switching is quick:

  1. Open rapidfile.cc on your computer or phone. Files up to 500 MB need no account.
  2. Set the expiry and any password or download limit before you upload.
  3. Copy the link, or read the 6-digit code to your recipient. Rapidfile does not email the link for you.
  4. For files between 500 MB and 2 GB, sign in with a free Enzonic account.

For files above 2 GB, Rapidfile does not fit. Stay with SwissTransfer, or look at a provider with a higher limit.

Which one should you use?

Use SwissTransfer when your files are larger than 2 GB, you want retention of up to 30 days on the free plan, or you prefer a Swiss provider. Use Rapidfile when your files are 2 GB or under, you want codes and QR codes for quick sharing, or you want ad-free paid plans and apps for Mac, Windows and Android. If you are unsure, check SwissTransfer's current FAQ and Rapidfile's pricing page, then send the file that matters most with each to see which one fits your recipient.
