SHAREit is a file transfer app that became popular for moving photos, videos and other files between phones, tablets and computers. Its main mode works without a shared internet connection: the two devices find each other nearby and send files directly. People look for a SHAREit alternative for a few reasons. Some are tired of the advertisements in the free version. Some want to send a file to someone who is not in the same room. Others want a link or a code that they can paste into a message and that does not depend on an app being installed. Rapidfile is one option for that second and third group. It does not replace a direct transfer between two devices, so this page sets out where each one fits.
The short version
| SHAREit (free) | Rapidfile (free) | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Direct transfer between nearby devices, also through its app | Upload to rapidfile.cc, then share a link, code or QR code |
| Internet needed | Not for the direct mode | Yes, on both ends |
| App needed | Yes, on both devices | No. A browser is enough to send and receive |
| Ads | Shown in the free version | Free plan is ad-supported; Plus and Pro remove ads |
| Size per transfer | Check the app or its site | 500 MB without an account; 2 GB with a free account |
| Expiry | Not a link-based service | 1 hour, 1 day or 3 days (7 days with a free account) |
| Password | Check the app | Optional on a transfer |
SHAREit details are based on its app listings and public reviews. Check the current app page for version and plan details.
Where SHAREit is the stronger pick
Being direct about this helps you choose the right tool:
- Two devices in the same room. If you want to move a batch of photos from one phone to a laptop beside it, a direct transfer skips the upload step entirely. Nothing has to leave your home network.
- No internet connection needed for that mode. Where mobile data is poor or you are somewhere offline, the direct mode keeps working when the internet does not.
- No upload limit to plan around. Because the files do not go through a server, you do not need to think about a 2 GB or 500 MB cap for a direct transfer between two of your own devices.
If your sending and receiving devices are in the same place, SHAREit's direct mode is usually the quicker choice. For a wider look at the field, see our comparison of free file transfer services.
Where Rapidfile fits better
- Sending to someone elsewhere. A Rapidfile transfer produces a link, so the person can open it on any device with a browser, in any city. You share the link yourself by email, chat or message.
- No app for the recipient. They open the link, or go to rapidfile.cc/receive and type the 6-digit code. Nobody has to install anything before the file arrives.
- Codes and QR codes. Every transfer comes with a 6-digit code and a QR code. Someone across the table can scan the QR code with the Rapidfile app on Android, or type the code on any device.
- Works in any modern browser. The web app at rapidfile.cc runs in any current browser, on a laptop, a tablet or a borrowed computer, and it is available in 180 interface languages. Nothing has to be installed to send a file.
- Ad-free paid plans. The free plan is ad-supported. The Plus and Pro plans remove ads on all Rapidfile products and apps.
- Expiry on a schedule. Links on the free plan last 1 hour, 1 day, 3 days or 7 days, and expired transfers are deleted automatically. You can also delete a transfer early. Read more about expiring file links.
- Desktop and Android apps. In the Mac and Windows apps, right-click any file in Finder or File Explorer and choose "Rapidfile: Get link" or "Send to my devices". The apps page lists what each platform supports.
Ads and the security record
Advertising is the most common complaint in reviews of SHAREit's free version. Some reviews describe ads appearing often during use, and app-store listings describe a paid option that removes them on some platforms. If ads bother you, check which version you are installing and what it costs before you install it.
Security researchers have also reported problems with the app. In February 2021, Trend Micro published findings on vulnerabilities in the Android version of SHAREit. According to coverage at the time, the issues could let a malicious app on the same phone reach files or run code, and the developer said it released a patch that month. Security coverage from that period also described the developer's response times as slow. Those reports date from 2021, so check the current version and recent security news before you decide. Nothing on this page claims SHAREit is unsafe today.
Reviews have also noted that SHAREit asks for access to the camera, storage, location, contacts and microphone. Some of these may be needed for particular features, but you can review and change what each app is allowed to access in your phone's settings, whichever app you choose.
For Rapidfile, the security model is different and worth understanding. Files are protected with TLS in transit, encrypted at rest on Cloudflare's network, and scanned with ClamAV when uploaded. Rapidfile is not end-to-end encrypted, and that is a real difference from a direct device-to-device transfer. A password on a transfer controls who can open it, but it is not end-to-end encryption.
Migrating from SHAREit habits
Many people do not need to switch at all. If you want to keep SHAREit for in-room transfers and use Rapidfile for everything else, the two work well together:
- Keep direct transfers for devices in the same place.
- For a file that must reach someone elsewhere, open rapidfile.cc on the device that has the file.
- Drop the file in, choose an expiry time, and add a password if the file needs one.
- Send the link or the 6-digit code. Rapidfile does not email the recipient, so share it yourself.
Files up to 500 MB need no account. For files up to 2 GB, sign in with a free Enzonic account. The recipient never needs an account.
Which one should you use?
Use SHAREit when the devices are in the same room and you want the files to move directly between them. Use Rapidfile when the other person is somewhere else, when they should not need an app, or when you want a link, a 6-digit code or a QR code that expires on schedule. If you need ad-free sending and a choice of expiry, compare Rapidfile's Plus and Pro plans with SHAREit's current options before you pay for either.
Many people end up using both. A direct transfer is hard to beat for a photo shoot in the same studio, and a Rapidfile link is easier when the file has to reach a client, a relative or a colleague who is not standing next to you. Choosing per job, rather than picking one tool for everything, is usually the simplest approach.
FAQ
Is SHAREit free?
SHAREit can be downloaded and used for free on Android, iOS, Windows and macOS. Its free versions show ads, and app-store listings describe a paid option that removes them on some platforms. Check the current app listing for prices.
Does SHAREit need an internet connection?
Its main mode connects two devices directly, so it does not need internet access to move files between them. Rapidfile needs an internet connection on both ends, because the file is uploaded and then downloaded.
Is Rapidfile a replacement for SHAREit?
Only for some jobs. Rapidfile suits sending a file to someone in another place, or to someone who wants a link, a code or a QR code. For a fast transfer between two devices in the same room, SHAREit's direct mode is built for that.
Does the person receiving need the SHAREit app?
With SHAREit, both devices generally need the app. With Rapidfile, the recipient needs only a browser at rapidfile.cc, or the code entered at rapidfile.cc/receive.
How big a file can I send with Rapidfile?
Up to 500 MB per transfer without an account, and up to 2 GB per transfer with a free account. The Plus plan raises the limit to 10 GB and Pro to 50 GB per transfer.
Is Rapidfile end-to-end encrypted?
No. Files are protected with TLS in transit and encrypted at rest, but Rapidfile is not end-to-end encrypted. For the most sensitive files, use a tool that offers end-to-end encryption.
