A Free MEGA Alternative for Sending Files

MEGA is encrypted cloud storage with a free account. Rapidfile is built for sending one file with a link, a 6-digit code or a QR code. Here is how the two compare and where each one fits.

Step by step

  1. Add your files

Drop files or a whole folder onto the uploader at rapidfile.cc, or tap to pick them on a phone.

  2. Pick the options

Choose an expiry time, and optionally add a password, a download limit, a title or a message.

  3. Share the link, code or QR

Send the link, read out the 6-digit code, or let the other person scan the QR code.

  4. Recipient downloads

They open the link, or go to rapidfile.cc/receive and type the code. You can close your tab once the upload finishes.

MEGA is a cloud storage service. You create an account, keep files in it, and make links that let other people download them. It is known for encrypting files end to end, and its free account is a common starting point for people who want more online room than a basic drive offers. People look for a MEGA alternative for a few different reasons. Some only need to send one file and do not want to keep it online afterwards. Some want the person receiving to avoid creating an account. Others find the rules of a free storage plan hard to predict. Rapidfile is one option for that narrower job. This page sets out where each one fits, including the places where MEGA is the better choice.

The short version

MEGA (free) Rapidfile (free)
What it is Cloud storage with shareable links A transfer service; links expire
Account Free account to create and keep files None up to 500 MB; free account for up to 2 GB
Encryption Described by MEGA as end-to-end encrypted TLS in transit and encrypted at rest; not end-to-end
Storage over time Files stay in your account Transfers are deleted at expiry
Expiry Check their site 1 hour, 1 day or 3 days (7 days with a free account)
Ways to share Link Link, 6-digit code and QR code
Free allowance Check their site for storage and transfer rules 200 transfers or 50 GB a day; no monthly counter
Paid plans Check their site Plus $3.99 a month; Pro $7.99 a month

Plans change. Check MEGA's site for current storage and transfer rules, and Rapidfile's pricing page for ours.

Where MEGA is the stronger pick

Being direct about this saves you time:

  • End-to-end encryption. MEGA describes its storage as end-to-end encrypted, which means files are encrypted before they leave your device. Rapidfile is not end-to-end encrypted. If a file is sensitive enough that the service itself should not be able to read it, MEGA's design is the first one to look at.
  • Files you want to keep. Rapidfile transfers are temporary by design, and they are removed at expiry. A storage account is built to hold files for as long as you keep them, so you can come back to a document or a folder months later.
  • A single online home for files. If you want one place for documents, photos and folders that you open again and again, a storage account suits that better than a transfer link. Rapidfile is not a drive you organise and sync. Its Media and Upload API products store files persistently, but they are separate products for hosting and for developers.

If you need a place to keep files, start with a storage account. If you need to pass one file along and then let it go, the next section sets out where Rapidfile is the better fit.

Where Rapidfile fits better

  • No account for the person receiving. Recipients open the link in a browser or type the 6-digit code at rapidfile.cc/receive. Nobody needs to sign up or install an app.
  • Codes and QR codes. Every transfer gets a link, a 6-digit code and a QR code. A code is quicker than spelling out a link when the person is across the table. The Rapidfile app on Android can scan the QR code.
  • Expiry you choose. On the free plan a link lasts 1 hour, 1 day, 3 days or 7 days, and files are deleted automatically at that point. You can also delete a transfer early. For more on this, read about expiring file links.
  • Sending without an account. Files up to 500 MB go through without signing in. With a free account the limit is 2 GB per transfer. The guide to sending files without signing up covers the steps.
  • Apps for desktop and Android. In the Mac and Windows apps, right-click any file in Finder or File Explorer and choose "Rapidfile: Get link" or "Send to my devices". Full details are on the apps page.

Encryption: what each one actually promises

This is the difference most worth weighing before you choose. Rapidfile encrypts files in transit with TLS and encrypts them at rest on Cloudflare's network. That protects a transfer from anyone watching the connection and from anyone who reaches stored data without the keys. It does not make the file unreadable to the service, because Rapidfile is not end-to-end encrypted.

A password on a transfer controls who can open it. It is a form of access control, not end-to-end encryption, and Rapidfile does not describe it as one.

MEGA's model is different in a way that matters for sensitive material. The aim of end-to-end encryption is that the storage provider holds the files but not the means to read them. If that is a requirement for your work, choose a tool built for it, and do not rely on Rapidfile for the most sensitive files.

Free plans work differently

MEGA's free account is a storage allowance with transfer rules attached. Rapidfile's free plan is built around individual transfers. Without an account, one transfer can be up to 500 MB. With a free account, it can be up to 2 GB. There is no monthly transfer count, and the free plan has a daily quota of 200 transfers or 50 GB.

Check MEGA's site for its storage allowance and the rules that apply to transfers. If you are choosing based on how much you can move in a day or a month, compare the two sites directly.

On Rapidfile, an expired transfer is deleted automatically, and a recipient who opens the link later sees that it is no longer available. You can also remove a transfer yourself before it expires, which is useful if you sent the wrong file or no longer want it online.

A storage account works the other way round. The file stays where you put it until you delete it, which is what you want for a working archive and less useful for a file you only meant to share once. Decide which of those two outcomes you want before you upload.

Moving a file from MEGA to Rapidfile

If a file sits in MEGA and you want to send it to someone who does not use MEGA:

  1. Download the file from your MEGA account to the device you are using.
  2. Open rapidfile.cc and drop the file in.
  3. Choose an expiry time, and optionally add a password or a download limit.
  4. Send the link or the 6-digit code. Rapidfile does not email the link to your recipient, so you share it yourself.

Files up to 500 MB need no account. For larger files, sign in with a free Enzonic account. Nothing changes for the recipient, who opens the link or types the code.

Which one should you use?

Use MEGA when you want encrypted storage that you keep and return to, or when a file is sensitive enough that end-to-end encryption is a requirement. Use Rapidfile when you want to send one file with a link, a code or a QR code, let it expire on schedule, and keep the recipient's side free of sign-up. For larger files, or for anything that must stay protected end to end, confirm the current limits on both sites before you decide.

FAQ

Is MEGA free to use?

MEGA has a free account. Its current free storage and transfer allowance are listed on MEGA's pricing page, and they change, so check the site before relying on a number.

Is Rapidfile end-to-end encrypted like MEGA?

No. Rapidfile encrypts files in transit with TLS and at rest, but it is not end-to-end encrypted. For the most sensitive material, use a tool built for end-to-end encryption.

Do recipients need an account to receive a Rapidfile transfer?

No. They open the link in any browser, or go to rapidfile.cc/receive and type the 6-digit code. No account or app is needed.

How long does a Rapidfile link last?

On the free plan you can choose 1 hour, 1 day, 3 days or 7 days. Plus allows up to 14 days and Pro up to 30 days. Files are deleted automatically at expiry.

Does Rapidfile have a monthly transfer limit?

No. There is no monthly transfer counter. The free plan has a daily quota of 200 transfers or 50 GB.

Does Rapidfile have an iPhone app?

No. iPhone users use the website at rapidfile.cc, which works in any modern browser.
