LimeWire was once a well-known peer-to-peer file sharing app, and the name is still widely recognised. The company now runs a different product. Its website describes a web-based cloud service where you drag files into a browser, get a share link, and optionally pay for larger uploads and longer storage. The brand and the name are the only real link to the old application. People look for a LimeWire alternative for several reasons: they want to know what the new service costs, they need a link that outlasts a few days, or they are unsure whether the service is the one they remember. Rapidfile is one option. This page sets out what the current LimeWire site says, and where Rapidfile fits better.
What the new LimeWire is
The old LimeWire was a peer-to-peer desktop program that shared files directly between users' computers. A US federal court ordered it shut down in 2010 after a copyright case brought by the record labels. The brand later returned under new owners, first as a digital media marketplace and then as the cloud file sharing service it is today. Apart from the name, today's LimeWire has nothing to do with the old app.
The current LimeWire site describes a cloud platform. You sign in or create an account to manage plans, and you upload through the browser. Its homepage also shows a crypto signals promotion and a LimeWire token price with a buy link. Those are unrelated to file sharing, but they are part of what you see when you visit the site, so judge the service on its plan terms and not on its banners.

Where LimeWire is the stronger pick
LimeWire's free plan has real advantages, and its paid plans go much further than Rapidfile's:
- A higher free ceiling per file. LimeWire lists 4 GB per file on the free plan, and Rapidfile's no-account limit is 500 MB. Even with a free Rapidfile account at 2 GB, LimeWire's free plan accepts bigger single files.
- Larger paid files and storage. LimeWire's Pro plan lists 250 GB per file and 2 TB of storage at $9.99 a month. Rapidfile's Pro plan gives 50 GB per transfer for $7.99 a month. If you regularly move files above 50 GB, LimeWire's top paid tier is the larger option.
- Links that never expire on paid plans. LimeWire says files on Pro and Pro+ never expire. Rapidfile transfers are deleted at expiry, which is the right behaviour for one-off sends but not for a permanent library.
If your files are very large or you need a link to stay live for months, LimeWire's paid plans may fit better. For a broader comparison, see our guide to free file transfer services.
Where Rapidfile fits better
- Codes and QR codes. Every Rapidfile transfer gets a 6-digit code and a QR code. The recipient types the code at rapidfile.cc/receive, or scans the QR code with the Rapidfile app. See sharing files with a code.
- Expiry you choose on the free plan. Pick 1 hour, 1 day, 3 days or 7 days. LimeWire's free plan fixes shared links at 3 days. See expiring file links.
- Clear limits without a paid plan. Rapidfile's free plan covers files up to 2 GB with an account, and its Plus plan at $3.99 a month covers 10 GB per transfer. Each figure is stated on the plan page.
- Apps for desktop and Android. The Mac and Windows apps add "Rapidfile: Get link" and "Send to my devices" to the right-click menu. The Android app adds share-sheet support and QR scanning.
- Passwords and download limits. Add a password to any transfer, or limit how many times it can be downloaded.
- Folders without zipping first. Folders are zipped in your browser with their structure kept. See sending a folder online.
Before you pay for either
Paid plans only make sense if you know what you will send and how long it must stay available. Ask three questions. How large is the biggest single file? If it is under 10 GB, Rapidfile Plus covers it at $3.99 a month, and LimeWire's Pro plan is not needed. How long must the link stay live? If the answer is a few days, LimeWire's free 3-day expiry and Rapidfile's 1-day to 3-day choice (7 days with a free account) both work, and Rapidfile gives you more control. Do you need the file to stay available for months? Only LimeWire's paid plans, which say files never expire, and Rapidfile's Media or Upload API products, which keep files until you delete them, cover that case.
Those last two products are separate from the transfer service. Rapidfile Media is aimed at images and video with CDN links, and the Upload API is for developers building apps. If your need is a permanent library of shared files rather than a one-off transfer, read the Rapidfile Media or Upload API pages before you choose a plan.
Privacy and security
LimeWire's site says its service is end-to-end encrypted and describes its file editing tools as included on every plan. We did not verify how its encryption works, including how keys are handled, so ask the company for its security documentation if that matters to you.
Rapidfile encrypts files in transit with TLS and at rest on Cloudflare's network. It is not end-to-end encrypted, and it scans every upload with ClamAV. Files are deleted automatically at expiry or when you delete them early. If end-to-end encryption is a requirement, check LimeWire's documentation and treat Rapidfile as unsuitable for that particular file.
Moving from LimeWire to Rapidfile
If you want a free option for files up to 2 GB, or you want a code and a QR code instead of a long link, switching is simple:
- Open rapidfile.cc on your computer or phone. Files up to 500 MB need no account.
- Set an expiry time, such as 3 days (7 days with a free account), and add a password if the file is sensitive.
- Share the link or 6-digit code yourself. Rapidfile does not send an email to your recipient.
- For files above 2 GB, sign in with a free account, or choose Plus or Pro.
Recipients open the link or type the code. They do not need to install an app.
Which one should you use?
Use LimeWire if you need to send files larger than 50 GB, or you want shared links that never expire on a paid plan. Use Rapidfile for smaller one-off sends, codes and QR codes, a choice of expiry time on the free plan, or apps for Mac, Windows and Android. Before you pay for either service, check its current pricing page, because both publish their terms and both change them.
FAQ
Is the new LimeWire the same as the old LimeWire P2P app?
No. The current LimeWire website describes a web-based cloud file sharing service. Press coverage of an earlier relaunch described a different product, and the original peer-to-peer app stopped operating years ago.
What is the free LimeWire plan's file size limit?
LimeWire's pricing page lists up to 4 GB per file on the free plan, with 40 GB of storage and shared links that expire after 3 days. Check its site for current terms.
Does Rapidfile allow bigger free uploads than LimeWire?
Not per file. LimeWire's free plan lists 4 GB per file. Rapidfile allows 500 MB without an account and 2 GB with a free account. Rapidfile Pro allows 50 GB per transfer.
Do I need an account to send with LimeWire?
LimeWire's pricing page says an account is not required to upload and share on the free plan, but an account is needed for paid plans. Recipients should check the site for their own requirements.
Are LimeWire's shared links permanent?
Not on the free plan, which lists 3-day expiry. LimeWire's paid Pro and Pro+ plans say files never expire. Rapidfile transfers expire at 1 hour, 1 day or 3 days (7 days with a free account), and are deleted automatically.
Is Rapidfile end-to-end encrypted like LimeWire claims?
LimeWire's site describes end-to-end encryption, and we did not verify its implementation. Rapidfile encrypts in transit and at rest and is not end-to-end encrypted, so do not rely on it for the most sensitive material.
