A Gfycat Alternative After the 2023 Shutdown

Gfycat was a popular host for short GIF-style clips, and it shut down in 2023. Here is what happened, what that means for links that still point to it, and how Rapidfile Media compares as a place to host images and video today.

Step by step

  1. Find your original files

Check your own drive or cloud storage first. Gfycat's content was deleted after September 1, 2023, so the original is the best copy.

  2. Open Rapidfile Media

Go to media.rapidfile.cc and sign in with your free Enzonic account.

  3. Upload and copy the link

Upload each file. Free files can be up to 100 MB. Copy the direct CDN link for each one.

  4. Update your old links

Replace the Gfycat links in your posts or pages with the new ones, and keep a list of old and new links.

Gfycat was a website for hosting short looping clips and GIFs. Its pages were linked from forums, blogs, social posts and chat messages, and its direct file links made it easy to drop a clip into a conversation. Gfycat shut down in 2023. If you are here because old Gfycat links no longer show your clips, the first thing to know is that the service is gone and its content was removed from gfycat.com. This page explains what happened, what that means for old links, and how Rapidfile Media compares as a place to host images and video today.

What happened to Gfycat

In July 2023, Engadget reported that Gfycat was being discontinued. The site's notice said that after September 1, 2023, all Gfycat content and data would be deleted from gfycat.com, and users had until then to log in and back up or remove their uploads. Engadget also reported that Snap, which owned Gfycat, planned to shut down the GIF database and delete user content within a few weeks of the announcement. You can read the original report in Engadget's coverage of the shutdown.

The date is the important part. Once the September 1 deadline passed, the content was no longer available on gfycat.com. Any Gfycat link you find now should be treated as dead unless you can confirm otherwise.

Links to Gfycat in older posts will not bring your files back. A few steps can help you recover what you can.

  • Check your own storage first. The original file on your computer or phone is the most reliable copy you have.
  • Look for a captured copy on the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine at web.archive.org. Archives keep snapshots of many pages, but whether a particular clip was saved is up to the archive, so do not assume it is there.
  • If you find a copy you have the right to use, upload it again to a host you control and update the links in your content.

Moving quickly matters for any clip that is still only on a third-party site, because hosts change their rules and shut down services with little warning.

Why people still search for Gfycat

Gfycat was known for quick links to short clips that played well in a browser and in forum posts. People who search for a Gfycat alternative usually want the same things. They want a direct link to a file, a simple way to upload short clips, and a host that does not disappear. Those are the criteria to check when you compare any replacement.

If you are not sure what happened to a particular link, test it in a private browser window so your own logins do not affect the result. A page that shows an error or a blank screen usually means the file is gone from the host. A page that loads but shows a different clip, or a message about an unavailable file, also means the original is no longer there. Keep a note of which links fail, because that list tells you exactly which files you need to find or rebuild. For each one, look for the original on your own drive, in a cloud account, or in an old message or post where you first shared it. Rebuilding from originals is slower than copying a link, but it is the only way to be sure the new link will still work next year. Once a file is back online, test its link on a phone as well as a desktop, since some pages render differently on each.

What to look for in a replacement

  • Direct file links. A link that opens the file itself works in an image tag or a chat preview, and a page link does not.
  • Retention rules. Find out whether files stay until you delete them or expire on a schedule.
  • File size and storage. Check the per-file limit and the total free storage, because a long clip can be much larger than a GIF.
  • Ads and paid plans. Free plans may show ads, and paid plans may remove them.
  • Who runs the service. Look for published terms and a company behind the site.

How Rapidfile Media compares

Gfycat Rapidfile Media (free)
Status Shut down; content deleted after September 1, 2023 Operating
Content Short GIF-style clips Images and video
Account Not applicable Free Enzonic account to sign in
Free storage Not applicable 1 GB

Gfycat has no current plans to compare, so its column reflects the 2023 shutdown reported by Engadget. Rapidfile figures come from Rapidfile's product information as of October 2026. Plans change, so check the pricing page before you rely on a number.

Where Rapidfile Media fits better

  • A link for every file. Each upload gets a direct CDN link you can paste into a page or post, so you can keep your links in your own content.
  • Video with embed codes. Videos play in a custom player, and you can place them on your own site with the embed code.
  • Clear free limits. The free plan includes 1 GB of storage, 200,000 CDN requests a day and files up to 100 MB each.
  • Control over deletion. Files stay until you delete them. You decide when a file comes down.
  • A copyright process. If a file needs to come down, or you want to file a notice, use media.rapidfile.cc/dmca.

What Rapidfile Media does not do

Rapidfile Media is a hosting and CDN service. It is not a GIF community, so there is no feed where clips are discovered by others. It is not end-to-end encrypted, so do not use it as a private archive. Rapidfile has no iPhone app, so iPhone users open the website in Safari. We have not published GIF-specific rules, so check the Media dashboard for accepted formats before you move a large library.

Which one should you use?

Gfycat is no longer an option, so the real question is where to host images and clips now. Rapidfile Media is a reasonable choice if you want direct links, embed codes and clear free limits. Start with your original files, not with copies you find on the web, and update your links as you go.
